Practice of Architecture: A fresh start, a tax strategy, and three episodes you missed

2026

Hello Reader,

I'm back. And yes, this newsletter is landing on a Sunday.

After experimenting with send days over the past year, Sunday seems to be when most of you are ready to read. So thank you for making a little space for me in your weekend.

Last year, I had to step away from Practice of Architecture to focus on my role as AIA President. A few times, I was asked to ensure the two remained separate. That was challenging for me. This work and this community are deeply tied to who I am.

But I chose to honor the role members elected me to, which meant letting go of some things here, at least for a while.

Now, with that chapter behind me, Practice of Architecture is my primary focus again. I've missed being in your inbox, and I'm grateful you're still here.

To kick off the year, I'm partnering with Gelt (who handles my personal and business taxes for Practice of Architecture) to bring you a webinar: Q1 Tax Blueprint for Practice Owners: Expert Guidance for Optimization. We'll cover what you can do now as you prepare your 2025 taxes and how to set yourself up for a stronger 2026.

It's happening January 17th at 10am PST / 1pm EST.

Register HERE and below.

I also want to catch you up on a few Practice Disrupted episodes that dropped while my newsletters tapered off at the end of the year.

🎧 Episode 211: Leslie Sydnor on Shifting from Practice to Design Management
Leslie shares why design management isn't a role architects have "given up," but a necessary function in complex organizations, one best filled by someone who can advocate for the design team.

🎧 Episode 212: Investing in the Built World, A Venture Capitalist's View on AEC Innovation Jesse Devitte, co-founder of Building Ventures, offers a rare look inside the mind of an investor and argues that architects must "lean in" to new opportunities like industrialized construction to maintain influence.

🎧 Episode 213: Radhika Parashar Narain on Rethinking Architecture's Digital Future
Coming from Figma to Arcol, Radhika shares her shock at the fragmented workflows architects navigate and her hope that we'll start demanding tools that bring joy back to the design process.

And looking ahead: Season 13 of Practice Disrupted launches the first Thursday in February. More to come on that soon.

Keep learning and growing,

2026 Hello Reader, There's a post that's been circulating for the past few weeks, and I keep coming back to it. AI entrepreneur Matt Shumer wrote an essay called "Something Big Is Happening," and it has nearly 70 million views. His opening line: "Every time someone asks me what's going on with AI, I give them the safe answer. Because the real one sounds insane." I've been thinking about that framing a lot. Because I've been giving the polite version, too. Here's what I want you to sit with:...

2026 Hello Reader, Happy Lunar New Year. The celebration was just this past Tuesday, and the season's message is still fresh. Renewal. Intention. Permission to carry forward the lessons while setting something new in motion. Growing up as the daughter of two Chinese immigrants, I was handed a very specific formula for success: keep your head down, work hard, and you will be rewarded. It took years in my career before I realized that formula, while well-intentioned, was also quietly keeping me...

2026 Hello Reader, A few exciting updates this week. First, congratulations to all those who earned their AIA Fellowship this year, especially friends of the Practice of Architecture, like Jennifer Kretschmar. If you're reading this and were elevated to the College of Fellows, reply and let me know. I'd love to feature you in an upcoming social post on PoA Socials. Speaking of social, we've finally made the jump to YouTube. You can now subscribe to the Practice Disrupted podcast there, and...
