Practice of Architecture: Student Leaders Rewriting What's Possible in Practice

2026

Hello Reader,

Happy Sunday.

We're slowly in the process of making some shifts at the Practice of Architecture. Focused on what it means to not only bring innovation to the industry, but what Transformation looks like. We're in it for the long haul.

It includes partnerships with educational institutions, webinars and courses, and a growing community.

Next week, we launch Season 12 of Practice Disrupted! Over 11 seasons, we've explored non-traditional career paths, practice innovation, and the meaning of reimagining how architects work and lead. Season 12 continues that conversation with architects, designers, and innovators who are building the future of practice.

Before that happens, I want to share the Season 11 finale with Gilberto Lozada Baez, the 69th President of AIAS, and Jordan Luther, immediate past AIAS president and student director on the AIA board.

🎧 Episode 220: Next Generation Leadership: How the AIAS Presidents Are Building a More Human Profession

Both are self-described introverts who never imagined national leadership roles. Through mentorship and what they call "shoulder tapping," they found their voices. We talked about post-pandemic work cultures, mental health advocacy, livable wages, and debunking tired Gen Z stereotypes. Gilberto's vision stayed with me: "I think the future of architecture is a little more human," which bursts the profession's bubble, becomes more interdisciplinary, leverages AI to free us for creative work, and actually values people as much as projects. Jordan emphasized that difficult conversations about equity and work-life balance aren't distractions; they are the work.

This conversation takes on a different meaning as Autodesk cuts 2,350 jobs while reporting 18% revenue growth, and the AEC industry navigates massive infrastructure projects, rising material costs, and a looming talent crisis.

These aren't naive questions from students; they're strategic questions from leaders actively rewriting what's possible.

What would it look like to build something more human in your practice?

Keep learning and growing,

2026 Hello Reader, There's a post that's been circulating for the past few weeks, and I keep coming back to it. AI entrepreneur Matt Shumer wrote an essay called "Something Big Is Happening," and it has nearly 70 million views. His opening line: "Every time someone asks me what's going on with AI, I give them the safe answer. Because the real one sounds insane." I've been thinking about that framing a lot. Because I've been giving the polite version, too. Here's what I want you to sit with:...

2026 Hello Reader, Happy Lunar New Year. The celebration was just this past Tuesday, and the season's message is still fresh. Renewal. Intention. Permission to carry forward the lessons while setting something new in motion. Growing up as the daughter of two Chinese immigrants, I was handed a very specific formula for success: keep your head down, work hard, and you will be rewarded. It took years in my career before I realized that formula, while well-intentioned, was also quietly keeping me...

2026 Hello Reader, A few exciting updates this week. First, congratulations to all those who earned their AIA Fellowship this year, especially friends of the Practice of Architecture, like Jennifer Kretschmar. If you're reading this and were elevated to the College of Fellows, reply and let me know. I'd love to feature you in an upcoming social post on PoA Socials. Speaking of social, we've finally made the jump to YouTube. You can now subscribe to the Practice Disrupted podcast there, and...
