Practice of Architecture: What's it meant to run a Regenerative Business

2025

Hello Reader,

This week, I had the privilege of joining a group of CEOs from leading architecture firms across the country for a candid conversation about the future of our profession. It was encouraging to hear how deeply invested they are in evolving their practices—from raising the value of what architects bring to the table, to staying relevant in a rapidly shifting world, to thoughtfully integrating AI into their operations.

What struck me most was that despite the size and complexity of their firms, these leaders are asking some of the same questions we all should be:

What kind of practice are we building? And how do we ensure it’s built to grow—not just in size, but in purpose, relevance, and resilience?

That question is at the heart of this week’s episode of Practice Disrupted.

I sat down with Josie Plaut, Matthew Broderick, and Suzanne Angarano to unpack what it truly means to run a regenerative business.

Just because you know how to design a regenerative building doesn’t mean you fully understand what it takes to run a regenerative business.

“You can’t innovate on everything all the time—but you have to choose to evolve, or risk slow extinction.” — Matthew Broderick

A regenerative practice isn’t defined by a checklist. It’s defined by a mindset—one that prioritizes growth for your people as much as for your projects. One that aligns your firm’s values with its strategy. And one that sees leadership not as a position at the top, but as a capacity to be cultivated across the entire organization.

As Josie shared, it doesn’t matter how big your firm is—regeneration starts with how you think.

Keep learning and growing,

2025 Hello Reader, I just returned from a trip to Southeast Asia, where I had the opportunity to meet with leaders from architecture organizations across the region. What struck me most was how familiar the conversations felt: no matter where you practice, the challenges architects face around business operations echo what we’ve been talking about here at home. The story is the same: a gap between what we learn in school and what’s actually needed to run a thriving practice. It’s not just...

2025 Hello Reader, I’m writing this issue while traveling through Asia — only the second time I’ve been here in my life — and the timing feels meaningful. It’s the start of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, a moment that always invites me to reflect on my own journey. As a first-generation Chinese American, I grew up under the quiet pressure of the “model minority” myth: work hard, be exceptional, stay respectful — and most importantly, stay under...

2025 Hello Reader, This week, I put together a presentation for the AIA California Board of Directors to help spark a deeper conversation around AI. My goal was to move beyond the hype and challenge how we think about integrating emerging technologies into our practice, not as surface-level tools, but as drivers of real transformation. Here’s what I encouraged the board to consider: AI isn’t just about automation—it’s about reducing the friction in our workflows. When implemented...
