Practice of Architecture: the Out in Architecture co-editors on gestures of love

2026

Hello Reader,

Tomorrow is the first day of Pride Month, and on Monday, Out in Architecture Volume II goes out into the world. This week's Practice Disrupted episode is the first of two conversations marking that release, and it is one of the few I have not hosted myself. I stepped back, Sarah Woynicz held the room, and four architects who shaped both volumes did the work of saying out loud what is getting harder to say each year.

I listened to this one twice. The first time as someone who has been around this work for a while and assumed I had the contours of it. The second time more slowly, because I had not. The safety check-ins these editors describe running with potential authors, the weight of stewarding someone else's first time saying the thing, the question of what visibility costs in 2026: I was not tracking how much of that work happens out of view.

There are conversations a leader can join, and conversations a leader serves best by clearing space. I am not always good at telling which is which.

Sarah, past chair of the AIA National Young Architects Forum and a candidate for AIA At-Large Director, is in conversation with the team that moved from co-authors of Volume I to co-editors of Volume II: Jha D Amazi of MASS Design Group, Beau Frail of Activate Architecture, Julia Oderda of VCBO Architecture, and Andrew Grant Houston of House Cosmopolitan. They talk about what it means to steward someone else's first time saying the thing, the safety check-ins they ran with potential authors after the last election cycle, and why professional cachet exists to be spent on the people coming behind you.

Hello Reader, NCARB just released the 2026 edition of NCARB by the Numbers. It is the fifteenth. For fifteen years, the profession has been able to see the path to licensure plainly: too long, too rigid, quietly losing people we should have kept. For most of those years we argued about it and changed little. What is different now is that the numbers are finally reshaping the path itself, into something more flexible and modular, built around where the data says people actually fall out. This...

Hello Reader, The story we keep telling about AI in practice is that it makes the work faster. Draw it faster, document it faster, and get the deliverable out the door faster. That might be the least interesting thing it does. The more useful thing, and the one almost no firm is built to use, is that it makes us question something we stopped noticing a long time ago: why are we still working the way we always have? It's the question I kept circling in this week's bonus episode, a conversation...

Hello Reader, My latest episode of Practice Disrupted is about AI closing the gap between a sketch and a built thing. I sat down with the team behind Trimble's 0-60 program and Formas.AI, and we discussed how quickly those tools are moving. /// Listen Here: Closing the gap between sketch and build, with Trimble 0-60 and Formas.AI. But the tools were never the part that kept me up. The harder question is what happens to the practice around them. Practice of Architecture is a business in...
